How can you spread joy today? How can you refresh others? How can your gifts bring out beauty around you? Whether you feel like you have the answers to those first questions or not, you can start small today. You can smile to people on your way to work, you can be kind to your coworkers, you can celebrate the wins of people in your life. These small acts do far more than we can imagine. Think of what your smile could do today. Let love overflow out of your life in ways you have not seen because you know where your source of love comes from. Sometimes we often are hesitant to give joy or share love In our lives because we feel we won’t have any left for ourselves, we won’t have enough to keep ourselves going. But God shows us we have an endless supply, rather our joy will multiply in our life once we spread it out. Our gifts will magnify in our life when we use them for one another and in unity with those around us. As we each do our part, we help grow the whole, we help strengthen the body and find that together we have far more impact than we do alone. So spread your gifts today, knowing what was freely given from Christ is to be a gift to others.

God has an abundance of gifts, and He delights in giving them to His beloved children. It does not matter if it's a divinely empowered gift of administration or an instantaneous gift of healing — God has it all! In fact, this vast variety of gifting comes from the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives, and it is for the purpose of bringing individuals together. When we look around on Sunday mornings, at Dinner Party, or even when we're hanging out with our friends throughout the week, we should see a beautiful and robust display of God's love and character manifesting through our community's presence. This is the outworking of Christ's unity in our lives, through His gifts given He unites us together. Look to those in your life today and see the gifts God has place on their life, see the outworking of his love all around you.

GIFT

When a machine of many parts operates, the gears and switches and bolts all humming along in a beautiful synchronicity, we experience a unity of purpose. This is the kind of unity we are meant to be caught up in. In the perfect harmony of the Trinity, unity flowed from love, unity beget beauty, and unity harbored a focused purpose. God’s purpose will unify us.

Whether we are apostles or shepherds, if we are in Him then we are in His purpose. And this common purpose lends strength to our unity—one heart, one vision, one aim—and our unity brings strength to this purpose. The more we work together—with grace, rhythm and efficiency—the more we walk confidently, one Body, in the same direction, towards the same Kingdom goal.

Ultimately, this the gospel picture of what it looks like to be fully alive. We did not just leave our old lives and sins in the grave, but in Christ, we have been raised to a new life of unity—one where we become fully mature, fully developed to run with purpose as part of His body, the church.

How do we arrive at harmony in our relationships? How do we perpetuate a life of peace? We seek, eagerly, to strengthen and encourage one another! If you and I seek the after the well-being and upbuilding of those around us, making their strengthening and their encouragement our priority, then we will begin to harmonize our lives with theirs.

The thing is, if I seek after the strengthening and encouragement of another, and if they are doing the same for me and for those around them, then, when you add it up, each person is covered. If I spend my energy looking out for others, and others are looking out for me, I don’t need to fear nor do I have to put myself first. Someone else has my back and I have someone else’s back—that is the kingdom. We live looking after others’ well-being and we trust God to position others in our life to have our backs, to be there in our time of need to strengthen us. If we can trust the Father to cover us, we are free to cover us—and so we harmonize our lives with the many others in the Body of Christ.

God urges us to unify in love—togetherness in hard times and togetherness in times of celebration. Our community as Christians has the opportunity to build relationships from a God of unconditional love, a God who gave for us as we are to give for others. Harmony bleeds from His spirit. He has created us to find peace in loving one another. Every day we are surrounded by people of different circumstances. How available have we made ourselves to love them? To see them as important, as worthy of investment, as much as we see ourselves?

Jesus says our unity leads to His joy, by "having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” (Philippians 2:2) Nothing is below us, but sin. Love has the power to unify even the most diverse of beliefs, opinions, situations and lifestyles. Let us celebrate, together, that we are all children of God.

MEANING

Even when we have a level of love in our lives, division can come in. Thoughts will creep into our mind that are not of God, whether it’s towards someone else or it’s towards ourselves. We can’t actually achieve unity without the power of Christ with us. Living in unity is being one with Christ; it’s living for Him but far greater it’s living in relationship with Him. It’s allowing the power of God to be greater than any other power in our life that is trying to take hold. Our society will continue to tell us to think of self, to be jealous of others so that we can be better, move up the ladder and try harder. But Christ will continue to tell us we are enough, to lift those around us up so that they can be better, and that He will value us no matter what our achievements are in life. It’s a choice to live with the power of Christ in our mind allowing us to lift those around us up instead of tearing them down or reaping a benefit from them or their failures. Living with the power of Christ brings unity around our life, brings peace inside our minds and wholeness to our hearts—knowing our value in Him cannot change. Let us live for unity today, live with Christ today, so that the world’s idea of jealousy will not affect our love for one another.

It is all too easy to fall prey to the heirarchal structure present in the world's leadership. It's a structure built on clout and selfish gain, saying, "What you can do for me determines how I interact and relate to you." Regretablly, this structure creates an invisible caste system in our minds — a system that is inherently against the ways of the Kingdom of our God. If we are not purposefully submitting our thought life to the ways of God, we can unintentionally walk how the world walks all while talking how Jesus talks. Therefore, it is healthy to regularly check in with Jesus, asking, "What do you have to say about how I'm loving my friends and neighbors?" With that singular display of healthy personal-confrontation we will find our spiritual maturity strengthed and refined by and through God's powerful love.

What love really comes down to is the small things, the details. It’s people interacting with one another, speaking life to one another. It’s choosing to be humble, to give our best to others and through that true unity comes. The church is God’s hope for the world., His plan for us to live in community, in unity with one another. How will we show our city the unity that Christ fought for for us? As we come to an ending of our 92-day summer series, this month will all be in New York City as we see the heart of one another through the people around us in the city we call home.
