"So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."
// Genesis 1:27
There’s a scene in the 1992 Disney film Aladdin when a nervous, young Aladdin is trying (and failing) to impress Princess Jasmine. So, as you may remember, the genie transforms himself into a tiny bumblebee and flies around Aladdin’s head to encourage him when he needs it most: “Just beeeee yourself!” For some reason, I hear that little blue bee buzzing around my head regularly, even today.
The fact is, if God made us, then He made us the way we are for a reason. That includes aspects of our physical bodies and our minds, but also our personalities. God wants us to be our true and best selves – the selves He created us to be. He made us the way we are in order to reflect unique and intricate aspects of His own personality, His creativity and His glory, which He has instilled in each and every one of us. Whether we believe it or not, it’s all in there!
The truth is, God likes your personality! He likes your sense of humor, He likes your individual style, He likes your quirks and your eccentricities – even the little things you find a bit odd! Why? Because we are made in His image, and because He likes Himself quite well, we know He likes who we are too.
Being our true and best selves gives glory to God. Accordingly, when we despise who we are, either by wishing we were different, wanting to be more like someone else, or trying to ‘fake it ‘til we make it’, we diminish the unique aspects of Himself that God has deposited in us. By hiding our little light “under a bushel,” if you will, we deprive others of an opportunity to catch the reflection of God’s magnificence in us.
“God loves you,” can become a throwaway comment, a Christian catchphrase without a lot of meaning. But “God actually, really likes you!” can be a fresh, encouraging truth!
