Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

// Proverbs 4:23 [NLT]

Have you heard of the popular saying, “As a manthinketh in his heart, so is he?” (See Proverbs 23:7) In ancient times, people believed the heart was the central part of our body. It was the one organ thought to control logic, emotions, and soul.

Simply put, your heart is your mind and thought life. Your thought life is the one essential and central part of your body that has the power to determine the rest of your life.

Did you know that the enemy constantly wages war for our minds? In 1 Peter 5:8, it is written: “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” We need to make sure we guard our hearts. That means to protect and defend our minds from the enemy’s lies, by renewing our thought life with God’s words and prayer. Why is this so important? Because thoughts and beliefs will lead to attitudes and actions, which in turn determine our character, and ultimately our destiny and the direction of our lives.

When we take action to meditate on God’s words and His love for us, His words take root deep in our hearts. We naturally start to behave accordingly, and our lives align to His will. And we know that by living from what He thinks of us and staying in His perfect plan for our lives, we will not come to any harm. As in Jeremiah 29:11, He says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Notice also that Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heartabove all else”. It’s an active and present command for us to take. It doesn’t mean that it happens automatically, and we can sit back and relax. It is a priority to defend our hearts and minds against the enemy. The battle for our minds is real, and we should continually submit our thought life according to God’s words – not to the world or what it says about us.

When we guard our hearts, we are free to live our lives in peace and joy, knowing that our Heavenly Father has got our back. There’s no fear or anxiety and the lies of this world fall away. Life springs forth; abundant, joyful, and peaceful life.
